The eagle-eyed among you will notice some new content on the right hand side of the page.  The page is a guide (with appropriate caveat) on how to disable the confirmation sounds on the LG CU500 phone.  While this may not sound like a big deal, it is probably the biggest drawback I can list about the phone now that I have been using it for some time and as I Googled around I realized I was not the only one.  People notice the sounds, they wonder why I have not disabled them and then they cannot believe it is not configurable.

Well, neither could I but it is true nonetheless.  Having eventually conquered the problem, I am amazed at how difficult it was – this should be a simple menu option, not something that took me several hours to figure out.  Playing the individual sounds to figure out which were the offending ones was pretty painful, believe me.  Even with the guide I think many will be reticent to go ahead with the process, it is not for the faint hearted or the non-technical.
Since I also figured out how to synch up with Outlook, I included that in the guide also.  Hopefully people will find it useful, and my post on the Cingular forums should help spread the word (while it lasts).  Personally I feel much better about my choice of phone now, though for a while there I was having my doubts.

  1. Hey man, I was wondering if you can help me out here. Recently jus got my phone, bout 1 day old, and what I did was not purchase the media packages, for financial reasons.. Anyway with no media packages, i was told that if i do connect online, i would pay massive amount for each minute. Not wanting this to happen, I wanted to find a way to disable the feature of going online, and the media downloading..

I was only looking to use the phone for basic regular use(calling, alarm, calendar), and mp3 playing(microsd)..

If you can help out on how I maybe able to do these(disabling features), I would gladly appreciate it.. thanx

  2. Actually, I don’t have the media packages either – if you don’t want to use the online features you don’t have to. If all you use is the calling, alarm, calendar and mp3 player you will never have to go online. The only other reason I can see that you might have to go online is to validate a Java app you have installed and that is covered on the page I already have up.

From what you are saying it sounds like you want to block someone else from using the online features. It might be possible to lock that out but I haven’t looked into it – have you asked your provider about locking it out from your service completely?

  3. thanks a million for that cu-500 trick. that was really helpful. I didn’t even know that program (bitpim) was out there. The best part is that I’m a programmer as well, so now I can tweak stuff till my phone explodes. haha, anyways, i’m stuck trying to find a workaround for this aspect of the phone… how do you get it to vibrate for text messages? i’m sure you’ve noticed that it’ll only make a sound when you recieve a text, regardless of ring style (ring, vibrate & ring, vibrate then ring). The only way i found to make it vibrate on text messages is when you set your ringer volume down to “vibrate all.” The obvious drawback being that you don’t get any sound when you get calls/texts (duh). your thoughts?

  4. You mentioned you modified an old data cable to use on your CU500. I bought a straight through data cable that supposedly works with my CU500 (labeled for a VX6000, and it does work if you don’t mind the screen going bonkers, and the phone getting REALLY hot). I was wondering if you could post or email me the proper pinout for the cable to work on the CU500. Searches on the internet come up strangely mum on this subject. I understand there may be a difference between the cable needed for this phone when using Cingular service as opposed to other carriers, but it appears that you have Cingular too, so no worries.

  5. The modifications I had to make were purely physical – I already had a compatible cable from a pin out perspective, however I have found a pin out which should be compatible. Take a look here:

    http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-A-N/lg_common_24p_pinout.shtml

In a slightly more summarized format, that would be:

    USB Pin……..LG Connector Pin
    1.(Vcc)………..16
    2.(D-)…………10
    3.(D+)…………15
    4.(GND)………..12,19
Short 21 to 2 on the phone side.

    Hope it helps :)

  6. I wanna thank you for your guide as I’ve had the CU500 for about 4-5 months now as a company phone and have loved the speed and everything about the phone except the aspects you outlined.

Now with custom text message tones and no annoying confirmation sounds I can enjoy it even more. Although one last thing bothers me. Mark mentioned it as well. The no vibrate on text messages is crazy. I doubt there would be a very easy hack for it, but figured I’d ask anyways. :) Again thanks

Oh, btw, I have the unlimited media packages and just wanted to say that the phone works wonders on the internet, especially in a 3G area. So if you can afford it, it’s worth it. You could also tether, and use it as a modem. Haven’t tried it yet, but will. Cheapest unlimited internet is $19.99. It’d be worth it if it works.

  7. I just got this phone today and the mp3 player plays, but no sound. I have all the volumes up, but there is a icon of a headset at the top, is that the problem? can you help me?
