Back in the day, my Aunt Jen fancied herself as a bit of a photographer and we were her favourite guinea pigs. This picture is of my little sister Gillian playing in a field in Wexford and it’s one of my favourites. Now, she’ll probably want to murder me for this but it’s only right that I post the next one too – not quite as high quality but funny as hell – wait until I send it to her friends on Bebo :)

As I mentioned in my previous post – I owe Caz a shout out. Why?
Well she is responsible for the delivery of a heavily (employee) discounted sound card to yours truly, namely the top of the line Creative X-Fi Elite Pro. Despite the stupid name, it is quite a nice sound card and fits in nicely with my new system. It is pictured above with my Sennheiser HD600′s hanging off it and the sound it drives through those is *very* nice.

I believe she was also responsible for its “little brother” there to the right (now moved to the older machine) making its way into my clutches – so a double shout out in that case :)

Of course this means that I will now have to get a set of 7.1 speakers to take full advantage of the thing – just don’t tell Jen :)

Does anyone else find it scary that this is a sound card and it has 64 MB of RAM? I mean I remember when that was a lot for a PC, let alone a graphics card – I never thought I’d see it in a sound card……

Pandora is excellent – it just rocks – go try it, you won’t be sorry.

Then there’s Lifehacker – that rare kind of site that’s actually interesting. Related to the first because of this excellent article.

Finally, where did I find out about these things?

While getting my daily dose of Penny Arcade of course :)

Oh, and don’t worry Caz, your shout out is coming – I just need to upload a couple of things…..

It even has integrated blogging tools (writing this with them right now). After uploading a heap of photos I haven’t gotten near 5% yet, so all looks good so far. I think this is my favourite pic so far – now all I have to do is hope that my Uncles have internet access :)

Well, the festival (what I remember of it at least) was a blast. I threw up some pics from the phone here and I have to say, I’m thinking about going pro with Flickr – Gallery is good, but Flickr is soooo easy & convenient….

I know Joe beat me to the punch and has some much higher quality pics up already (part 1 no less!) so head on over there for even more entertainment. As some others have mentioned to me, it was good but probably not $100+ good. Still, I would have had more value for my money if I had not quadruple fisted the old Vodka & Redbull – live and learn :)

Thanks again to Ryan for driving us there and back, particularly the following day when we all just wanted to sleep.

Jenny is just back from gallavanting around Belgium (Gent) and Holland (Amsterdam) with Caroline. While she was off enjoying herself I was laid up with a pinched nerve or some such thing in my back. I don’t remember doing anything to hurt it, it just seemed to come out of nowhere and so the long weekend was a write off – I didn’t feel close to normal until yesterday evening. So my girlfriend parties in Amsterdam while I am laid up at home – but am I bitter?

Well, yes, actually I am :p

Just got done watching the Andre Agassi Vs Marcos Baghdatis match at the US open. What can I say – the guy is a stud, after it went to a fifth set I thought it was over for Agassi, but fate (and his conditioning) seems to be on his side at the moment.

When a 21 year old cramps up against a 36 year old in his retirement tournament, then the 36 year old deserves to win – glad I remembered it was on, haven’t enjoyed a tennis match that much since Ivanisevic finally won Wimbledon…….here’s hoping for 5 more wins just like it :)

With the switch to WordPress I realized that I would be able to import my old KillingMachines.org blog from the archive site that they kindly provided. I had tried to do it in the past, but the format (Movable Type) was no good for importing to blogger. Nice to get the old entries back :)

So, it was TK’s birthday on the weekend, when she turned (ahem!) 28, the (in)famous Johnny O was in attendance and I got to hear the JC Penney/Banana Republic bathroom story first hand. Yes, it is funnier when he tells it himself, and no I will not be repeating it :)

Slight typo in the title – it should be Virgin Rules – and I’m referring of course to the upcoming festival in Baltimore that Ryan was good enough to bulk-purchase tickets for all of us in advance. Said rules were released today and seem somewhat needlessly restrictive, a sample:

  • No knives/weapons of any kind (OK – fair enough)
  • No outside food and beverage, except plastic factory sealed water bottles (2) (Booo! – and how big can the bottles be?)
  • No professional cameras (changeable lenses) (eh? – why the hell not?)
  • No pets (not even sure why this is listed, maybe Paris Hilton is showing up…..)
  • No drugs/drug paraphernalia (Boooo! again, but understandable :) )
  • No laser pointers (OK – I hate the damn things too)
  • No fireworks or explosives (Dammit! and here I was going to bring my Uzi and mow down The Who)
  • No musical instruments (Not an issue for me, but I magine some of the bands will be upset…..)

On the geeky side I finally got an old Origin 200 up and running – I managed to get IRIX CD’s from a friend and it is running like a charm. I’ve never used Irix before but it seems like a fairly standard Unix implementation. I would have like to run Linux on it, but the support just is not there for the platform and despite my best efforts I couldn’t make it stable under Linux.

Update (10/17/06): I have created a static page with more detail for this issue since the post was generating quite a few hits.

Just got Ubuntu 6.06 running on a Sun Blade 150. Besides some RAM related weirdness – I had to remove one of the sticks of RAM to get it to boot and install – it went pretty smoothly. In fact it worked better than the Solaris 10 installation I had tried a couple of days ago. In the end I gave up on Solaris, it just wasn’t worth the hassle, though I will say that I did eventually get it into a semi-working state on the Desktop – it just took too long to get it there.

The Ubuntu server install booted without an issue. I then installed gnome, kde and the X font server – that was when things went wrong. The X Server (Xorg) would start but my monitor (a Dell 1905FP) would tell me that it couldn’t display that video mode. Despite trying every resolution and bit depth I could think of, this behavior persisted. It was then that I came across a post on the Ubuntu forums, it was for a Sun Blade 100 but the PGX64 card (which is ATI Rage based) was the same. The post contained the crucial information needed to remedy the problem, a line had to be added to the Device section of the xorg.conf config:

Option “ReferenceClock” “29.500MHz”

Once that had been added, the X Server came up and displayed without a hitch. Given how hard it was to find the solution, I figured I’d add my entry to try to boost the Google entries :) Every day I get more and more impressed with Ubuntu. It still has some way to go in terms of Enterprise tools, but for every day use it is starting to come into its own, and that is from someone with an RHCE :)
