Yes, I know it is not a word, blame Joe for the portmanteau (ooh, that rhymes).  I had to order a new charger for my phone, having left the old one in London, and I broke down and bought a bluetooth headset as well. As you can see for the nice blurry picture, it is pretty small…..

I had to do something to satiate my gadget buying instincts so that I don’t end up buying an iPhone – I try to stay away from the first generation of Apple products.  In this case I expect the 2nd generation to have 3G and a far higher storage capacity, so I think I will wait.

Got home yesterday, went for a quick bite in King Street Blues with Jen and then hit the sack.  12 hours later I was ready (almost) to face a day in work, some coffee fixed that.  I notice that the Captain has pictures up from the lake house a couple of weeks ago, including some “strange” ones in the hot tub, oh dear….

I haven’t quite finished with pictures from the trip, but the ones from Dublin were not that great – they are smack bang in the middle of the wettest June on record. In fact it crossed the record mark with 9 days to go and when I left on Sunday there had been 12 consecutive days of rain.  It was a pity, especially for some of my American co-workers that were visiting for the first time – usually the weather makes a liar out of me (I complain about Irish rain a lot) but this time I was shown to be correct.

As a bonus though my trip coincided with my Grandmother’s 75th birthday, well almost – it is actually today (Happy Birthday Gran!), but she didn’t mind the card a day early :)

It’s a little weird to be working back at the old office 3 years later, though I suppose with all the people that have left and the layout changes it is not really the “old office” but there are still plenty of familiar faces about. I’d visited before, but not actually had to seriously work like the last couple of days. In addition to using up their meeting rooms, we crashed their summer office party at the races in Leopardstown on Wednesday which was good fun, but (of course) I won nothing. As you can see in the picture below, we (or at least Dave) tried to blend in convincingly, not sure we quite managed it though. The rest of the pictures have been added to the existing set, I prmise to take nicer ones of Dublin if it ever stops raining.

Today is my last work day, then I get to relax and hang around Dublin Saturday before I fly back to the US on Sunday morning which is approaching with the usual mix of anticipation and irritation – you want to get home but don’t want to spend 12-14 hours traveling….

Today is a lazy day so far, needs to be after the last couple of nights :) Dennis and I have been getting after it a bit this weekend since I got to London Friday evening. Since his room mate is out of town I have been staying with him in his place in Kensington, which apparently used to be Anna Friel’s place :)

Looks like I’ll be heading to Brick Lane to have some food with Jan and Ev so that I can buy them some congratulatory drinks, then the plan is to have a quiet one so that I’m not a zombie for work tomorrow. We had dinner on a boat last night before heading to Walkabout for a birthday party, then back to Archangel for some signature cocktails and the pictures are up in the usual place. Below is a shot pre-dinner with the Eye and Big Ben in the background, one of my favourites so far, red eye and all :)

We hit the Champs-Élysées today and went to the top of the Arc de Triomph before grabbing some yummy food and some beers down that way – I took a few more shots and added them to the existing set, I think the one below is my favourite.  As for the mystery – anyone know why there were hundreds of people dressed all in white eating dinner and generally having a good time all around the Arc?

It was pretty cool whatever the reason, though the pictures don’t do it justice.  I took some video too – maybe it i time to finally post some stuff on Youtube too…..

My blogging frequency has been poor recently (OK, non-existant), ironically because I have had so much going on.  Therefore a bulleted list will have to suffice before I dive back into work and visa paperwork. Let’s see, we’ve had:

My next post, which may also take a while, should be from the old country.  Then it is on to Luxembourg before I finally get back here on the 19th (assuming no visa issues).  The nice thing is that I get to fly business, so that helps somewhat.  As a picture teaser, here’s one of the group in MCCXXIII (1223, DC):

Right, back to work……

I meant to post about this the other day when it was originally sent on, but it slipped my mind. The picture Joe used in his post about the Irish AOLers that spawned my aforementioned Wonkette-listed post attracted an interesting comment from an AOL user (that I can only assume is visually impaired). You can see the original below and the crop that Joe used (with comment) here.

Adam and Brian at Christmas

In case anyone has any trouble getting there, I will reproduce the text (with some de-capitalization):

I traveled all around the world most of my life and, I know for fact that “Irish People” are one of the most beautiful people on Earth… and you, are not an exception… wow!

Now, I know that is my best “how you doin’?” face (no, it does not work) and it’s a nice picture of Brian and I, but I don’t see the beauty. It must truly be in the eye of the beholder :)

Some of the Irish AOL crowd including yours truly are featured on today’s People Connection page in a post written by Joe Logon over at his work blog, Magic Smoke. There are more than the 4 featured Irish people working at AOL of course, but the request for info, thoughts and permission to use pictures went out a little late, so not everyone had a chance to respond. But, you will notice a common thread on the Patty Vs Paddy issue :)   I think I have ranted enough on that subject (apologies to I-66).  This blog even gets a link from Joe – woo!

Since I believe this is my first appearance on an actual AOL property, I took a screenshot (as usual, click for larger view):

Adam on People Connection

So, why the Mafia part of the title?

Well, several people have remarked to me recently that all the Irish working for AOL in the US appear to know each other. A lot of that has to do with the fact that we all originated from the same company in Ireland but we do make a bit of an effort too – several of the people I know now I never met when they were working for AOL in Dublin and a couple never worked for AOL in Ireland at all. It’s one of those things, you get to a new country and try to find something familiar to ground yourself and not feel completely freaked out.

For me, the Irish connection was extremely helpful when I got here. Brian, despite having met me a grand total of twice back home picked me up from the airport, got me to my company provided digs and made sure I was OK to get in on a weekend at 8 pm – if not, then I would have been sleeping on his couch. That safety net helps a lot – remember, when I got to the US I couldn’t drive, had never lived on my own before (let alone in a different country) and had no knowledge of the area I was moving to.

So, instead of being driven around by someone that knows the area and is willing to try to find the security office, help me with my luggage and offer me a place to stay if it doesn’t work out I would have had to get a cab, figure out where the place was, wander around looking for the guy who had my key, drag my bags up 3 flights of stairs solo……….you get the idea.

The “being Irish” thing (as in actually from Ireland) also gives you a great fat penguin in social situations. Brian does not agree, but that guy could make friends at a “we hate Irish people” rally. For the rest of us slightly more awkward social animals it gives us a nice fall back conversation topic in most scenarios – after all, everyone in America appears to fall into one or more of these categories:

  1. They are Irish or part Irish
  2. They’ve always wanted to go to Ireland
  3. They have been to Ireland and/or have family there
  4. They like Guinness/Irish Breakfast/Irish Whiskey etc.

It is rare to not get a friendly response, and people tend to remember you – even if it is only as the drunk Irish guy. So far, besides the whole visa thing there is not much of a downside to being Irish in America. That, of course was not always the case (just search for Irish on the page if you haven’t seen it).

Apparently even irrational numbers get their own day now.  Well, there is a reason – today (in the US at least) is 3/14 so at 1.59 am or pm you can celebrate Pi day.  For those that don’t have it memorized, Pi = 3.14159 – get it?

Unfortunately, since most of the rest of the world does not use the mm/dd convention or really care about Pi I don’t see this becoming a major event, though I could see “e day” (which could be July 2nd or January 27th depending on your date convention) catching on with a certain group of people :)

In any case, enough geekery but out of respect for the day, I thought I would re-post this picture from Seattle:

mmmmmm..........Pi

The caption was (of course) mmmmmmm……Pi :)

For anyone living under a rock, Saturday was Shamrockfest, and I had scored several free VIP passes (thanks Jamie) which meant we drank for free, had no beer line, got free pizza and got fancier rest rooms.

The pictures of the day are up in a Flickr set here. A good time was had by all – it was a beautiful day and we rounded it off with a trip to Julia’s Empanadas (my first – what took me so long??) in Dupont at what felt like 4 am but was actually more like 9.30 pm (things kicked off at noon).

My only concern had been the move out of Arlington – it had been so handy in previous years, but the move didn’t hurt the event one bit and the weather ensured very high attendance. I’m not sure it was 40,000 as advertised but there were a LOT of people there. There were many amusements available but, of course, the most popular attraction was the “El Capitan” ride which was only available to cute women with lower back tattoos, as illustrated below:
